Food Not Bombs is an international revolutionary movement organized along anarchist principles of egalitarianism, autonomy, anti-capitalism, and decentralization. We share vegan meals with hungry people in Pittsburgh three days a week as well as protest war, poverty, occupation, the globalization of the economy, restrictions to the movements of people, and the destruction of the Earth. We work in co-operation with other groups that share our principals in the Pittsburgh area.
On April 19th of this year, a group of neo-nazis gathered in Washington, D.C. to promote various "white pride" agendas. Also present that day was a much larger group of counter-protesters who gathered in opposition of the racist/xenophobic/anti-semitic messages being promoted. Among this group were several of our friends from the Pittsburgh area who traveled there to confront the nazi bigots. There they encountered an overwhelming show of police power designed to protect the nazis while they displayed their hate-filled agenda.
During the demonstration, a scuffle broke out between police and counter-protesters during which three Pittsburgh residents (among several others) were arrested. The state claims that several officers were pepper-sprayed during the incident and is charging all three Pittsburgh defendants with assaulting the officers, despite eyewitness accounts that only one officer was pepper-sprayed. Even with the offered plea deal, each defendant faces a minimum of two months in jail. By rejecting the plea deal and fighting their case, the defendants risk years of jail time, substantial fines, and deportation. And even a complete legal victory will still cost our friends thousands of dollars in legal fees, The fees are already mounting!
This is exactly how the state limits dissent and silences the voices of those it fears.
